Why nurses need IELTS Academic
To register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in the UK or AHPRA (Australia), internationally educated nurses must achieve specific IELTS Academic band scores in a single sitting:
| Regulatory body | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NMC (UK) | 7.0 | 7.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 |
| AHPRA (Australia) | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
All four scores must be achieved in the same test — a strong score in one skill cannot compensate for a lower score in another.
What this course covers
This course is built specifically for nurses and healthcare professionals. Every example, topic, and practice question is drawn from clinical and healthcare contexts — so you are revising English and building the professional vocabulary you will use every day in your new role.
Listening
Master all four parts of the Listening test, from GP appointment booking (Part 1) to academic healthcare lectures (Part 4). Learn to spot distractor tactics, manage the 10-minute transfer time, and spell medical vocabulary correctly.
Academic Reading
Tackle all 11 question types including the most challenging — True/False/Not Given and Matching Headings. Learn skimming and scanning strategies and how to manage 60 minutes across three dense academic passages.
Writing Task 1
Describe graphs, charts, tables, maps, and processes with precise academic language. Learn how to write a high-scoring overview paragraph — the single most important element for Band 7+ Task Achievement.
Writing Task 2
Plan and write a Band 7 essay in 40 minutes. Covers opinion, discussion, problem-solution, and advantage-disadvantage essay types — with healthcare topics such as nurse migration, telemedicine, ageing populations, and mental health policy.
Speaking
Use the AREA technique for extended Part 1 answers, the cue card preparation strategy for Part 2, and opinion/speculation language for Part 3 discussion questions. Includes healthcare-specific vocabulary for each common topic area.
How long does IELTS Academic preparation take?
Most nurses with a solid intermediate foundation need 3–6 months of focused preparation to reach Band 7 across all four skills. The biggest gains usually come from:
- Daily reading of academic English (medical journals, quality newspapers)
- Timed practice under exam conditions from the first week
- Recording and reviewing your own Speaking practice
This course provides the knowledge, strategies, and practice questions to make every hour count.
